SQY US Tour Report

After a long and, for some, terrifying journey we arrived, Thursday afternoon June 21, at Pink Snow’s place in New Jersey. This would be our hide-out for the next five days (and nights) of our American tour. Our first gig was the same night at Don Hill’s NYC and we managed to arrive at the place 5 minutes before we were supposed to kick off the Porn Rock ball. It was “plug and play” and totally different from what we are used to in Holland. But it was a good lesson and a good experience.

The Porn Rock ball was a gathering of eccentrics, voyeurs, fetishists and transvestites. We really felt as if we were supporting actors in a kinky movie, and of course the SQY front man, mister sleaze himself, was in his habitat. He was offered a part in an adult movie, but he refused because he wouldn’t get the main part (and he was offered only a $100 fee).

Anyway, our first night ended with a beer at the bonfire in Pink’s back yard and two fire trucks paying us a visit. The firemen took it lightly because the fire was in a confined place and that, apparently, is allowed in back yards in New Jersey.

The next day was a day off and we could sleep late and make a trip to the impressive New York City. Saturday was the day of the Coney Island (Brooklyn) Mermaid Parade.  This really was, with the help of the sun, alcohol and dozens of “mermaids”, a tropical experience. Wim and his drum kit were in the back of a U-Haul truck. Harald was, escorted by the girls of Erocktica, singing on top of that truck and Martijn and Joost were on a float behind the truck. For more than an hour our fragmented band was welcomed by (ten)thousands of enthusiastic people.

Sunday SQY made their appearance in the renowned “Frank Wood Presents” session  at Otto’s Shrunken Head NYC. This place is well known by New York bands for it’s one of the few places left that does live music. After a 40 minutes show and an after party in a dubious bar, the chaotic but impressive SQY US tour was coming to an end. We surely had lots of fun, alcohol, good company and we met lots of nice people. Sound man Ron still didn’t have enough and we had to leave him behind so he could join Erocktica on their trip to Florida. He is probably indulging in an abundance of sun, sexy girls and rock ‘n roll. I doubt if  he will ever return to Holland.

SQY USA Toerverslag

Na een lange, en voor een enkeling een angstige, heen vlucht kwamen we op donderdag 21 juni tegen de middag in New Jersey aan bij het huis van Pink Snow (zangeres Erocktica). Daar zouden we gedurende onze vijf dagen tellende mini USA-toer verblijven en ‘slapen’.

We zullen jullie de redenen besparen maar uiteindelijk kwamen we pas om vijf minuten voor 21 uur moe, hongerig en vol stress aan bij Don Hill’s. Hier zouden we om 21 uur het Porn Rock Ball openen. Het was letterlijk gitaren inpluggen en spelen! Een groot contrast met de wijze waarop in Nederland dingen worden georganiseerd en gepland.

Op het Porn Rock Ball liepen vele excentriekelingen, voyeurs, fetisjisten en travestieten rond. Het leek alsof we figuranten in een goedkope volwassenfilm waren. Het scheelde niet veel of de frontman van SQY zou zelf in een heuse Amerikaanse pornofilm hebben gespeeld! Het geld had hij reeds in zijn handen, maar zijn ja-woord bleef (helaas??) uit. Onze eerste avond sloten we met een biertje bij een soort kampvuur af. Dit leverde ons een bezoek op van 2 brandweerauto’s (met sirene) die op nonchalante wijze het vuur (en al het bier) goedkeurde.

De dag erna konden we gelukkig uitslapen en hadden we de dag vrij om het drukke en imposante New York te bezichtigen. Op zaterdag speelden we samen met Erocktica tijdens de Mermaid Parade in Coney Island. Dit werd, onder andere onder invloed van een hete zon en veel alcohol, een onvergetelijke (tropische) ervaring. Wim zat in een open truck achter zijn drumstel, Harald stond al zingend bovenop een busje en Joost en Martijn hadden de aanhanger tot hun beschikking. Voor (tien)duizenden fraai uitgedoste mensen reden we een uur lang in een parade en speelden we het nummer ‘From Soho’. Samen met Erocktica hebben we er een groot feest en fraaie attractie van gemaakt en reageerden het publiek zeer uitbundig en enthousiast.

Zondag speelden we in de bar van Frank Wood, genaamd Otto’s Shrunken Head. Een kleine maar fameuze bar waar een vijftal bands uit New York SQY voorgingen. Na een set van 40 minuten en een fijne afterparty in een dubieuze kelder sloot SQY en crew haar chaotische maar zeer indrukwekkende Amerikaanse tour af met veel alcohol, jolijt en geneugte!

Ron (geluidsman) kon geen genoeg krijgen van het avontuur en is uiteindelijk in New York achtergebleven om tot eind juli met Erocktica onder andere naar Florida te gaan.
